NORTHAM – The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo achieved a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking on February 7, 2025. A 35-year-old male suspect was apprehended in Northam, Waterberg District, for attempting to transport a substantial quantity of dagga valued at over R15 million.


The operation, driven by intelligence-led insights, culminated in the interception of a truck suspected of carrying illegal goods en route to Zambia via the R511 Brits road. At approximately 21:00, Northam detectives received crucial information that prompted the activation of a joint operation involving Visible Policing, the Community Policing Forum (CPF), and Rural Safety units who set up surveillance at the junction of the Brits-Northam road.


Upon stopping the truck for a routine inspection, law enforcement officers conducted a thorough search, revealing an astounding 44 bales of compressed dagga cleverly concealed between bedding, pillows, and mattresses. Each bale weighed roughly 45 kilograms, with an estimated street value of R8,000 per kilogram, culminating in a total value of R15,840,000 for the confiscated drugs.


The driver, a South African citizen, was arrested immediately on site, and both the truck and its illegal cargo were seized.


Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, praised the diligent investigation, emphasizing that this operation represents a significant stride in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and safeguard the community from the detrimental impacts of illicit substances.


The suspect has been charged with serious offenses related to drug trafficking, and further legal proceedings are underway. The commitment of SAPS to securing our communities and eradicating illegal drug activities remains steadfast.
