LEPHALALE:In a significant ruling, the Lephalale Regional Court handed down substantial sentences on Monday, February 10, 2025, to two men for their roles in a brutal murder and assault that occurred in Marapong. Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, expressed her approval of the court's decision, highlighting the importance of justice in such violent crimes.

The accused, Monene Lucky Matlhatse (31) and Majadibodu Ramadubu John (33), faced charges stemming from a tragic incident that took place on November 5, 2020. According to court proceedings, the accused launched a vicious attack on a 21-year-old male, stabbing him multiple times with a bottle. The assault occurred next to a local tavern, leaving the young victim with severe injuries.

Following the attack, the victim managed to flee to his father's house, located nearby. Unfortunately, he collapsed at the entrance and succumbed to his injuries before medical assistance could arrive. In a further chilling turn of events, as the victim's father ventured outside to investigate the commotion, Matlhatse and John attempted to run him over with their vehicle. Thankfully, the father escaped unharmed, but the accused fled the scene shortly after.

Thanks to the diligent work of Sergeant Nndwamato Mambo of the Lephalale Detective Unit, a case was opened, leading to the swift apprehension of the suspects on the same day. The two men were initially granted bail on December 20, 2020, each posting R5000.

In the sentencing phase, Monene Lucky Matlhatse received a 15-year prison sentence for murder and an additional three years for the assault with intent to grievous bodily harm (GBH), with both sentences to run concurrently. Meanwhile, Majadibodu Ramadubu John was sentenced to three years in prison for assault GBH.

Lieutenant General Hadebe commended the investigating officer and all involved in the case for their relentless efforts in bringing the perpetrators to justice. "We appreciate the commitment demonstrated by the investigating officer and everyone who participated in the case until the court rendered its decision," she stated.

The sentences serve as a reminder of the broader fight against violence in communities and the importance of swift justice for victims and their families.
