BELA BELA: The Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation, in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), has executed another successful operation, resulting in the arrests of five traffic officials at the Bela-Bela Driving Licence Testing Station. The arrests occurred on February 12, 2025, and come as part of an ongoing crackdown on corruption within the province.

With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in connection with fraudulent licensing practices has risen to 24 since the operation began. The arrested officials, aged between 37 and 59 years, are among a group of driving licence examiners, administrative clerks, and driving school instructors involved in illicit activities.

The recent wave of arrests follows a prior operation conducted on February 7, when eleven suspects were taken into custody at the Lephalale Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC). Eight more were apprehended at the Thabazimbi DLTC on February 10. These arrests stem from a lengthy investigation that began in 2021, aimed at identifying officials who were inappropriately issuing learners' and driver's licences in exchange for bribes.

The RTMC’s national traffic anti-corruption unit initially reported the matter to the Hawks, leading to the thorough investigation that uncovered widespread corruption in the licensing process. Following the investigation's conclusion, the case was handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), which authorized arrest warrants for the implicated individuals.

During the operation, various gadgets believed to be instrumental in the fraudulent activities were seized and will undergo forensic examination to gather further evidence.

The five arrested officials are scheduled to appear in the Bela-Bela Magistrate's Court on February 13, 2025. Authorities are continuing their efforts to dismantle corruption and fraudulent activities within the Limpopo province, with investigations revealing over 1,300 applicants potentially involved in these unlawful practices.

The Hawks and RTMC remain committed to addressing fraud and corruption in the road traffic sector, ensuring accountability and integrity within the licensing process for the safety of all road users.
