In a somber turn of events, the South African Police Service has reported a tragic drowning incident that highlights the dangers of rivers infested with crocodiles.
On February 7, 2025, at approximately 09:00, police in Maleboho received reports of a drowning and a potential crocodile attack at the Mogalakwena River in Arrie Village. Upon arriving at the scene, officers were directed by local community members to the lifeless body of an African male still submerged in the river.
Initial investigations revealed that the deceased was last seen fishing in that very spot, leading authorities to believe he may have fallen victim to a crocodile attack. The Provincial Search and Rescue Team was quickly summoned, and the body was retrieved from the river.
Tragically, the body was recovered with significant injuries, missing both hands and parts of the abdomen. Emergency medical personnel subsequently confirmed the individual’s death. The deceased was identified as Phuthi Oscar Serumula, a resident of Arrie Village in Maleboho. An Inquest case has been registered to facilitate further investigation into this heartbreaking incident.
In light of this incident, local authorities are issuing a strong warning to all residents. Swimming, fishing, or crossing rivers known to be infested with crocodiles poses a serious risk to life. To prevent further tragedies and to ensure the safety of the community, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution in and around these waterways.
The South African Police Service remains dedicated to the safety of all citizens and encourages those with any information regarding the incident to reach out to law enforcement.
