Lt. Col. Nkuna: A Pillar of Community Safety and Leadership in Limpopo
POLOKWANE: Lieutenant Colonel Khomisani William Nkuna, the Commander of the SAPS Polokwane Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit (VCIU), is a dedicated leader in the battle against vehicle-related crime in Limpopo. With over 30 years in the South African Police Service (SAPS), his tireless efforts have led to successful prosecutions and enhanced community safety across the province.
Since joining the SAPS in 1990, Lt Col Nkuna has exemplified service and perseverance. Rising from a shift driver to head of one of Limpopo’s vital investigative units, his career reflects a deep commitment to law enforcement and justice. In 2025 alone, under his leadership, the VCIU secured 72 convictions, resulting in over 472 years of imprisonment and the recovery of 39 stolen and hijacked vehicles.
Lt Col Nkuna urges the public to remain vigilant and adopt basic safety precautions, which include not leaving keys in unattended vehicles, exercising caution when accepting rides from unknown individuals, and reporting suspicious activities immediately to law enforcement. His message is clear: “Vigilance saves lives.”
His career began as a Community Service Centre (CSC) member, diligently addressing community concerns. His pursuit of knowledge drove him to earn a Diploma in Policing from Technikon SA (now UNISA) in 1995, leading to his transfer to the Detective Service at Nebo in 1996 and later to Polokwane Detectives in 1998.
In 2000, he was appointed as a Group Leader in the Detective Service, earning the Best Group Leader Certificate in 2003. Committed to innovation, Lt Col Nkuna was the first officer to attend the Sector Policing Course, which he successfully implemented upon his return.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Lt Col Nkuna is a devoted family man, drawing strength and inspiration from his wife and three children. He serves as a mentor to young detectives, emphasizing the values of patience, integrity, and mental well-being.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, and the management acknowledge your excellence, Lt Col.
