The Modimolle Regional Court has sentenced Markus Ndlovu (34) to 20 years in prison for his convictions of rape and murder. The decision comes after a long journey for justice, following the severe crimes committed by the accused.
The first incident occurred on 28 August 2016, when a 23-year-old woman was at a local tavern with friends. Ndlovu approached her, dragging her to an abandoned house where he threatened her with a knife and raped her. Thankfully, her friend arrived in time to help, prompting Ndlovu to flee the scene.
Following the brutal attack, law enforcement traced Ndlovu, resulting in his arrest in April 2023. During legal proceedings, bail was successfully opposed, ensuring he remained in custody leading up to his trial.
In a separate and chilling incident on 21 May 2021, Ndlovu notified his mother via text message that he had killed his 35-year-old wife. Upon her arrival at their home, she found her daughter-in-law in a pool of blood, leading to her immediate call to the police and the opening of a murder case. After evading capture temporarily, Ndlovu was apprehended in April 2023.
Further complicating matters, in 2024, Ndlovu attempted to trace the victim from the 2016 rape case, which had previously been withdrawn due to her being unreachable. Thanks to the diligent efforts of the Modimolle Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offenses Unit, the case was reinstated. Warrant Officer Cicka Kruger took the reins of the investigation, showcasing meticulous skills that ultimately led to both cases being prosecuted.
After a lengthy trial, the court found Ndlovu guilty on multiple counts: for murder, he received a 15-year sentence; for rape, he was sentenced to 10 years; and for crimes against gender-based violence under the Criminal Procedure Amendment Act 51(2), an additional 5 years were imposed. Importantly, the sentences for murder and rape will run concurrently, resulting in an effective total of 20 years imprisonment.
Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, commended the diligent work of law enforcement and the legal system in delivering justice for the victims. The case serves as a reminder of the commitment to combat gender-based violence and the importance of supporting survivors in seeking justice and protection within the community.
