RAPIST SENTENCED TO 20 YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR SEPARATE RAPE INCIDENTS IN VAALWATER, WATERBERG DISTRICT



POLOKWANE – The Modimolle Regional Court has rendered a decisive verdict, sentencing 43-year-old Elias Sello Cry Ngoepe to a total of 20 years of direct imprisonment for committing two separate rape incidents in the Vaalwater policing precinct, within the Waterberg District.


In both cases, DNA evidence was instrumental in linking Ngoepe to these heinous crimes. He was located in Rustenburg Prison, where he was already detained for separate rape allegations. Following this discovery, he was formally arrested on 29 May 2023 for the Vaalwater incidents.


Crime Narratives and Sentences:


- Charge 1:On 6 March 2017, an 18-year-old woman fell victim as she slept in her home. Ngoepe forcibly entered the premises, threatened her with a knife, and committed the assault. The court sentenced him to 12 years of direct imprisonment for this crime of housebreaking with intent to rape and rape.


- Charge 2:Occurred on 29 July 2019, wherein a 30-year-old woman was returning home from a tavern around 01:40. Ngoepe approached her while she was unlocking her door, held her at knifepoint, and raped her. Consequently, he received an 8-year sentence for this offense.


The sentences were handed down on 31 March 2025 in the Modimolle Regional Court, marking a victory owing to the diligent efforts of Detective Warrant Officer Ciska Kruger from the Modimolle Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.


The Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the court's decision and applauded the investigation team for their meticulous work, ensuring justice.
